ok my question is can a 74 chevy steering column be swapped into a 78 chevy?secondly the 78 in question has idiot lights and i want to add accessory gauges-how hard is that to do?as far as my 30 dollar score i bought 2 complete good doors and 2 complete good fenders off a 77 GMC from a friend for get this.....30 BUCKS.anyway just wanted to ask that and tell you about my score.

yes having friends who are broke and need money when they have something you need are great lol.i almost had the truck the doors and fenders came off of for free a couple weeks back but that deal fell through due to the underhanded dealings of someone else-not me or my friend and i would have had a bed that i need for my 78 as well.oh well though s**t happens.

Hell of a deal. Only thing on the column the shaft after the column that attaches to the box may be different on years so make sure to use the shaft for the right steering box.

For the gauges, you will need a gauge cluster. The light bezel won't have the cut outs for the gauges. I would find a gauge bezel and swap it in. The wiring on the plugs will be in a different order. At least it was on the 87 van I swapped a gauge cluster into. The wire colors are the same, but in a different order in the plug. Just get the plug from the donor truck and cut your old one off and rewire it, color to color.

The steering boxes changed in 77 and again in 80. Not sure what was different in 77, but in 80 they went to metric. The input shaft on the box is smaller in diameter for 80 up so the flexible coupling on the column won't fit, not counting the PS hoses won't fit.

yes tom that is the plan.it means ill have to drive a ford briefly but the ends will justify the means

does the needing a gauge cluster ring true if i were to use aftermarket gauges such as autometer or for stock gauges.i have a 74 dash bezel with the gauges-would that work in a 78 dash?i think i can handle some wiring if need be.i also have the 74 and 78 steering boxes so which should i use?
