Help Installing Hood Emblem
I got a new Hood Emblem on ebay. My hood has never had one. Anyone out there got any tips on where to drill or how to install?

Will have to drill 3 holes. 1 for the spring 1/2 inch or more & 2 for pins & clips 13/64. Not crazy about drilling holes. should i treat the holes.

I would definately paint the bare metal where the new holes are, you can also put some clear silicone on the bolt to help keep water out and keep the chance of water hitting bare metal to a minimum.

There should be a hole in your underhood metal that you can stick a wrench through to install the hood emblem I would also treat those holes, and also stick silicone underneith to help seal the hood. I personally love the look of these emblems, your truck seems to be getting to look a lot like mine, lol! Now I just need to fix my rust and stuff...

There isn't a way to bolt it on . it has 2 pins on either end and the spring in the middle. I think you drill the holes then insert the pushin body clips then insert the emblem like side emblems.

It uses "pal" nuts. They are stamped sheetmtal nuts that screw on to the pins. You can get them from GM or at the local hardware store.

You also need to very carefully thread the posts on the emblem or you will not be able to get the pal nuts on. I had to do this with the aftermarket hood letters that I bought for my 67 chev.

Or do you have to run a die on it?

Yes you need to thread it with a die. Very carefully. Dont try to hog off too much. Just find the size that puts enough of a thread on it for the nut to have something to grab.

They are also called "speed nuts". If you have the correct size, they should cut their own threads. They cut a very course thread as they go on, but you have to have the correct size. Here is what one looks like-

There also should be a plastic spacer that fits between the hood and the metal base to the ornament. This prevents the edges of the pot metal from grinding their way through the paint and causing rust.
Good luck!

Now you tell me. Already installed but I dont think this was the right one. I believe it was for 81-87 and mine is an 80. Is there a differrence in the hoods? Where can I get the spacer?

Well I was going to tell you that I thought the truck would look nicer without it but I generally don't like to make those sort of comments. The hood style does change as you suspected. No going back now I guess.

I guess it will have to do for now. Until I find the correct ornament or get another hood. both of which take money.
