LS Oil Cooler - Plug or Not?
What's everyone doing with the oil coolant port on their LS? I've seen several block off plates for sale. Are ya'll running to a cooler or not? I pulled the PS cooler from my donor LS truck but planned to use that for my PS since I'm still running hydroboost. Still planning to run my trans cooler to my radiator since I have a port for it (and the trans looks amazing thanks to having a cooler).
Thoughts on the oil cooler? Would love to see what others have done. |

Re: LS Oil Cooler - Plug or Not?
I deleted the cooler on my 5.3/4L80E conversion. I have about 2000 miles on my swap with no issues however I'm not watching engine oil temp either. Lets see what others are doing.

Re: LS Oil Cooler - Plug or Not?
I always delete them since most are just a place for an oil leak to occur. I've always been a fan of keeping the oil in the engine! They're up there with remote oil filters, and that cheap clear nylon hose they sell for oil pressure gauges. I had one of those rub through and dump all the oil out of the engine, it happens fast, cant imagine how fast it would be on a hose the size of an oil cooler line.

Re: LS Oil Cooler - Plug or Not?
Remember, its not to be plugged.
Its a pass through, from one hole/port in the block to the other. Last year, I had built a harness for a jeep buddy, only to have him trash a perfectly good low mileage LQ9 6.0L by bolting on a block off plate instead of a pass through.

Interesting, always more than just some brackets for and LS conversion. Expensive lesson for sure.

Re: LS Oil Cooler - Plug or Not?
This is what I installed. It allowed me to install the oil pressure sender that came with my New Vintage gauges and at the same time eliminated the oil cooler fitting and lines from my LQ9.

Re: LS Oil Cooler - Plug or Not?
Good call out on the pass through! So far, most folks bypassing a cooler it seems. I like the oil pressure sender idea. Any other approaches?

A factory style bypass. There are a ton of trucks that left GM with this style bypass.
