47-55.1 Primer, self-etching or epoxy???

I'm making headway on shortening the 3600 bed. Got all the Rustoleum and bed liner stripped to bare metal. I'm getting conflicting advise on what to use now, regular primer, self-etching or epoxy on the bare metal. I'm going to get around to stripping the entire truck but in the meantime would like to prevent flash rust from forming.

I have used Squeegs hot rod primer on my 58 Cameo and have been very pleased with this epoxy primer. like the way it sands and you can use it as a filler primer also, i know its $$$ costly, but you do get two full gallons and a quart of the reducer. i media blasted an old milk jug container and sprayed it with this stuff for my wife to paint a mural on the jug for me, well it has been sitting outside for some time now because she hasn't had time to get to it and the milk can looks the same as the day i sprayed this stuff on it, no rust and still very clean.Squeegs is NOT paying me by the way to say this! Lol... just very happy with the product.

nothing but epoxy...although I have used etching primer in the past...epoxy is the best

SPI epoxy, nothing finer.

Yep I am using SPI epoxy primer. They will ship it to your door for pretty good price. Epoxy is a great overall metal, bondo, old paint you don't get all the way off kinda primer. Any metal etch you would need to remove ALL of that bondo for instance.

question for the body guys. same topic. I have epoxied some parts after sandblasting last summer. most of the dents were knocked out first but I got busy so I sprayed epoxy on them for safe "time out" without starting surface rust. now I am back to banging out the small remaining dents and have sanded off the epoxy in some spots as I work. the high build primer I have says "direct to metal". it's been awhile since the last paint job I have done and things have possibly changed. do I need to epoxy the bare metal again prior to high build even though it says "direct to metal? epoxy sands like bubble gum unless it is cured for a century so I'd rather not. I am using proform direct to metal 2k urethane high build primer PF 493-1. it is a 4-1-1 ratio with catalyst and reducer (if required).

if it says dtm then it should be ok...but after what I went thru with my primer issues, id use epoxy...im using s&w epoxy this time, and it cures out good in about 3 days...next one will be all spi

What the post whore said (lol) DTM. I would go to spi epoxy. Sands great after overnight or wet sand if in a hurry. What I have found is first coat of spi epoxy put on very light, wet but not full coverage or you will get cratering (more in there forums which are loaded with info & pros) it doesn't affect performance just may create sanding. Next coat load it on. (30 min)

tamco black 2k rust preventive primer primed a raw metal fender with it and it set out in the rain for 4 months . no rust bleedthrough im sold on it
