Stepside Spare Tire Fender Differences
I learned something new yesterday while I was trying to source a piece section to repair a drivers side stepside spare tire fender. I knew that there were no repop panels out there for the stepside fender. I thought possibly someone might have a fender that is toast in one section like the back of the fender and that the front section that mates to the step was good. I posted a picture of what I needed on social media groups on FB.
Then it came to me that I have a stepside bed on a 67 4x4 shortbed that is in pretty bad shape but it does have a spare tire fender. Went over and took a look and a few pictures. When I got home and started looking at the pictures and what needed to be repaired on the other truck I noticed that the spare tire cut out is a different size. So they made two different sizes of spare tire cut outs depending on tire size ordered with or possibly the difference between 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton. On the orange truck which is a 3/4 ton K20 the cutout goes below the body line break, on the silver truck which is a 1/2 ton K10 cut out stops before the body line. Anyways here is the picture of what I am trying to repair, I already have the step needed to make the repair there and I will possible cut out the section just below the spare cut out on the silver fender and fab in the section that I need onto the orange fender. If anyone knows of a lead on a repair section please let me know. Thanks!

Re: Stepside Spare Tire Fender Differences
Man, this is what makes this site a priceless resource. I always thought there were differences in the spare tire step fenders but never had examples at hand to compare.

I feel the same way and really learn something every time I login to site. I spend quite a bit of time reading build threads that are years old and have gain some sort of insight or knowledge on the what, when and how of the trucks.

Re: Stepside Spare Tire Fender Differences
I regret to say I had what you needed as I had a pair of OK quality step fenders but sold both of them for $100 last summer to get them out of my way.
I have a nice, solid set of 68-72 step fenders I am going to use on my project unless I run across a set of good 67 step fenders. Those are like looking for bigfoot.

Re: Stepside Spare Tire Fender Differences
The difference is not 1/2 vs 3/4 ton but short- vs long-step. The orange truck is a lwb, the silver is SWB.

Re: Stepside Spare Tire Fender Differences
3/4 ton trucks are all long beds regardless of stepside or fleet . Larger wheels made for a larger cutout

Re: Stepside Spare Tire Fender Differences
The shortbed the spare is mounted much higher in relation to the top rail . This most likely because there wasnt enough room between the fender and cab to mount lower like the long beds. First pick is of the long bed second is short

Re: Stepside Spare Tire Fender Differences
Was a little confused thought you were trying to fix the silver fender . If I was in your place I would buy a new fender and graft the cutout to that or piece in the lower part from the new. And sell the shorty bracket and all you'd probably come out better
I found mine at a local swap meet . Embarrased to say how much I paid for it . Only problem was it's a 67 my truck is a 68. So I'm looking for a LWB pass side to even it out

Re: Stepside Spare Tire Fender Differences
This afternoon I decided to take the step and fender off of the 68 K20 and see if I could work it back into shape. I spent about 45 minutes to and hour getting them both off of the truck. Then another 1 1/2 hours just working it with a dolly and hammer/ Also used heat in two major locations.
I thought I would give it a shot thinking that it would probably not work out and I would hav to cut a section from the shortbed truck at storage and fab it in. I was actually surprised at how well it turned out to the damage that was on the fender. Will need to work it with a file and more hammer and dolly to get it to be ready for filler work. Especially the area where the crease is and the fender rolls under. There is a distinct small body line that goes around the entire wheel opening just before it turns under.
