Windshield quality

I'm going to put a windshield in my truck and was planning on getting one from Summit racing. They have good shipping and if their was an issue I have dealt with them. Now they only have shaded ones and I don't care for that. It seems like pricing is all over. From $129. To almost $400 are there quality differences? I didn't figure that there are very many companies making these. Maybe there is I don't know.
I just want a green glass window.

Got all my glass from LMC trucks no issues they have the soft-ray glass

Call your local glass places, you'll be surprised what they can get...

It is all about COO. Glass made in USA is almost non existent. South Africa and the middle east are global manufacturing centers for the big three and if you know where it came from you will be miles ahead. Do not and I mean DO NOT buy glass from Asia. Asian manufacturing plants produce the waviest distorted products on the planet.

When I got mine every piece was wrapped in plastic and the box was felled with spray in foam and between every piece a lot of work to get it apart the truck shops glass says tinted but is it the green soft-ray? The soft-ray windshield didn’t come shaded that I know of

Forgot about that guy. Didn't know they were still at it. It was his panel at the Fathers day swap last year. I snapped a picture of it.

I just had mine installed last Monday. I called on Friday and surprisingly they said they could do it Monday, ok come on out. I ordered clear they brought a green shaded one oh what the hell. So this happened while they were putting the seal around the glass.

I'm sure I probably would have done the same thing and would have been out the price of another windshield. Now to your point on quality they showed me my original one with the new broken one next to it and there was a noticeable difference in thickness, maybe not half as thick but probably 2/3rds anyway. They said they could get another one from a different supplier and come back the next day and finish the job.

Two guys putting on the seal this time.

Just about done clear glass this time around too.

That's exactly what I was wondering. I thought I had a thin one once but was unsure of my own memory. I definitely remember one with an 1/8" misalignment in the sheets.

Never seen one break while putting the rubber on the glass. But I can imagine it with thin glass. The last one I did, I first started with an LMC gasket but it was sloppy. Way too long. So I spent the money for a Steele Rubber gasket. It was crazy tight. Too tight to put on the glass. Trying to form it around the curve would likely broke it. I put it on the truck which was still a hand full.

I'm so over crap parts.

My truck had the stainless trim on the windshield but when I tried to have the seal replaced with one I bought from Classisparts.com the glass place couldn't get it to fit. I bought a Steele Rubber seal and they said it was even worse. I took it to another glass place and they couldn't get either seal to work. my friend had a new windshield put in his 63 Suburban and they had no trouble getting the trim back in. My guess is the newer seals are made for the newer, thinner glass. I will eventually try again with a new windshield and see how that goes.

So here is the bad news.

Almost all glass shops today are staffed by employees under the age of 35, worse yet they are trained in the installation of urethane set windshields and have no practical experience in glazing in rubber set applications. Compound that with knowing how to install the stainless trim in our trucks that have that option and you now have a formula for pandemonium.

Stay away from the big national corporate shops and find a small mom and pop shop with an old timer and you will be much happier.
