Starter relay.

I have a random issue where the starter only clicks sometimes. I think I tracked it down to the firewall connectors. Only 9V sometimes.

Can I wire up the starter with a 30 amp relay instead? How would I do this with the park neutral switch from the 2002 4l60e?

It would not cost anything (Unless you don't have a set of Jumper cables)
Hook the negative jumper cable from battery to engine block.
Then try to start it and check your voltage.
If it is the same then your grounds are good.
So then go to the next test of your firewall connectors for broken or frayed wires or loose connections etc.

I’ll try that. I still want to get the park neutral switch in it since I’ve almost hit two cars starting it in drive.

Generally that's a sign the starter is on its way out, but could be caused by a wiring issue, hard to tell without really digging in and looking.

But if you want to use the NSS, which is always a good thing to have, it would be wired like this.
Use pins E and G on the NSS plug. Pin E, a pink wire, will be wired to the wire that comes from the ignition switch. You will have to test it to see which one is hot when in the 'crank' position. Then pin G, yellow, will be wired to the terminal 85 on the relay. Terminal 86 will be grounded. Terminal 87 will be a constant hot from the battery, usually through a 40a fuse, and terminal 30 will go to the starter solenoid.

I’d agree with starter going bad if it wasn’t that before the swap it was doing this exact same thing. Before the firewall but after switch I get consistent 12 volts, at firewall I get 9V sometimes.

A 30amp relay works? Or do I need a solenoid?

Check your clutch petal is the clutch switch bypassed ?

What is your truck ?

Checking grounds like desicribed if original harness is starting to fail look at aaw wire harnes buy it all at once or buy a peice at a time to replace worn sections of your harness

First thing i do when starting a stick shift is to double check its in neutral then start my truck or car does not take long for that to become habit

Inconsistent ground can be the reason for low voltage readings

Many wiring issues are bad grounds

Dirty connections in plugs
Worn wiring or wiring thats been altered

Go through it trouble shoot it further before you start adding new wiring modifications

I have a 4l60e in my truck. 1971 c10.

Do you happen to know where the grounds are? Are we talking the ground straps?

I run ground cables from the battery to the engine block and truck frame. Can't have too many good grounds. If I was wiring the NSS switch I would run a new correct gauge wire directly from the NSS switch to the solenoid not going the stock bulk head block. No telling what 50 year old wiring is like.

There are several ground points under the hood follow the engine harness and you will find wires bolted directly to the sheet metal there should be a ground strap engine to frame as well

Did you convet from standard to automatic ?

Hopefully I figured out my starter situation. Loose wire at the junction block. I get a good crank every time now.

I still have a ground issue. When my headlights are on, turn signals act weird.

I did install a strap from block to frame and the truck already a frame to body ground.

I will follow the harness and check/clean up grounds to see if that fixes it.

your signals did you check all your running lights work and signal lights work and do not have burnt out bulbs ?
