Factory Replacement Muffler Recommendation and Factory Exhaust Specs
I'm in need of a new muffler and exhaust. I would like to replace it with something as close to factory as possible in appearance and sound (quiet). I'm sure a few of the purists on the forum have done this type of thing so I'm hoping they will see this post. I'd imagine there are NOS mufflers floating around out there but it would be nice if there is something I could find that's readily available so I can get this done within the next few weeks.
I have a 1970 C/10 with a 307 with factory three on the tree, single exhaust and ram horns. Does anyone have any recommendations and/or pictures and specs of factory exhaust for my application (including the exhaust tip cut style). Thanks Last edited by cericd; 11-23-2020 at 04:46 PM. |

Re: Factory Replacement Muffler Recommendation and Factory Exhaust Specs
If you just need the muffler and no other pipe work done, I would imagine any muffler shop should be able to handle it with minimal cost. And to be honest, by the time you factor in cutting the muffler out, and having to figure out how to slip the new one in the old pipe, I would just take it to your local shop. I asked my mechanic for my son''t truck, but he went with headers and a whole new setup, which we ended up doing ourselves. I am sure others will chime in, but that is my .02 worth, and trust me, that's about all it is worth. LOL. RR

I tried to locate the original single exhaust parts. I only had luck with the Y pipe, rock auto had one in stock. The muffler and other pipes where not available. It is a pretty simple job if you have the YPipe.

Re: Factory Replacement Muffler Recommendation and Factory Exhaust Specs
Thanks for the info guys. I won’t be doing the work myself but I am trying to spur a good factory style muffler and maybe a schematic is the original exhaust layout. Just wanting to have it look factory and I know the tip of the exhaust had a particular cut. No chrome tip or custom stuff for this build.

Check out Waldron's Exhaust in Michigan.
http://waldronexhaust.com/cart/index...roducts_id=747 Runs $415 for complete aluminized steel system , plus shipping. I just got mine and had it installed, very happy. But it does take a few weeks to get it because it is custom made for your truck. And another thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...hlight=waldron

The longer the muffler the quieter it will be.

Might check out Advance Auto Parts, (no endorsement)

Re: Factory Replacement Muffler Recommendation and Factory Exhaust Specs
Won't help you, but in 1985 Jr in High School, I had a '74 F250 with 390 and granny 4-sp. Stock single exhaust. I really wanted duals and some turbo type mufflers. So my "friend" said go out, get it warm, push in the clutch, turn off the ignition, pump the gas, turn on the ignition, let out the clutch. It will blow the stuffing out and you can get what you want. First couple times it made a pop. Then it made a big boom. Split the muffler case right down the middle. My dad made me go to Sears and get a stock muffler put back on. Never did get exhaust like I wanted on that truck.
OP-maybe Midas or Mineke (or similar) would have original style mufflers?

Re: Factory Replacement Muffler Recommendation and Factory Exhaust Specs
I scored a NOS muffler on Ebay many years ago and still have it in storage. I'm waiting for the day when the muffler on my truck craps out.
I THINK it's correct for my 68 327 4B. I could post pictures/info if it's helpful. It's probably similar to what your 70 had though it's hard to say for sure.
