Original bed wood??
Disassembled the bed wood for a full freshen up of paint to the wood and metal strips to restore to like original color, appears to be original bed wood in fair condition.
Looks to be painted on the bottom side of the bed wood, anyone know if this underside paint would be original build? Anyone had experience refurbishing this original wood? Any tips? I know there are plenty of new wood kits out there, my goal is to refinish the boards and paint semi gloss black for ‘factory’ look. Thanks for advice.

Re: Original bed wood??
Yes, that does appear like it may be original. It would have been black, all sides. Perhaps the wood was stripped or sanded clean for a clear finish at some point, same time the red was added to the strips?

Re: Original bed wood??
Don't think those strips are original, they didn't have square holes.

I’m not saying you’re wrong but I think you’re mistaken

Re: Original bed wood??
If referencing jayoldschool he is correct. See pic.
I’m no expert, but looking at the two rear corner pieces in the first pic, did those pieces have the groove that’s on the edge that goes under the bedside from the factory as these appear? Also one bolt hole appears to not be in a factory place on one of them. Looks like it had a bolt through to the rear cross sill?Again this stuff is just fresh on my mind I’m no expert. |

Re: Original bed wood??
My 65 had the oem strips the square holes are so the bolts won’t turn I fought every single one because the square holes were partially rusted as well as the bolt letting them turn

Re: Original bed wood??
It's well documented on this forum: the original strips have round holes and use ribbed shank carriage head bolts. Not square holes. Square holes: aftermarket strips.

Re: Original bed wood??
Ya I know the strips are not original, they're in WAY too good of shape. Planning to have them sandblasted and painted same color black as the original bed would have been.
Pretty happy that the wood is in decent shape and reusable for being fifty five plus years old. Will plane off a thin bit of material off the top, sand and refinish, at least that's the plan optimistically. If anyone has any insights I'm all ears! Thanks for all your input and any tips.

Re: Original bed wood??
If it's original wood, you might be able to find a date stamp on one of the planks on the top side. After all this time, it might have been sanded off though

Re: Original bed wood??
Well I guess I learned something new all of mine spun and with the Rust I assumed they were square originally like the new ones

Yep, I uninstalled my originals with a sawzall and a grinder. No wrenches!

Re: Original bed wood??
That almost looks like OAK to me, bed wood was yellow pine, if it is original the 3rd or 4th piece, near the cab, will have a date stamp on it.
