1975 C10 with Volt Meter

Hi Guys,

I was hoping that someone might have some experience wit my situation. I have a 75 C10 Silverado with the factory gauges. All the inetrnet stuff I read says this truck should have an ammeter, but this one has a voltmeter. Anyone ever seen this ? Maybe a changeover model? It was sold new 10/13/74.

Someone probably swapped that at some point in time.

Notice the difference of the (Tick) lines.

Re: 1975 C10 with Volt Meter

The diameter of the needle base is larger on the volt meter and the number font is wider with a different character spacing from the oil pressure gauge.
1975 still had lettering rather than hieroglyphs. A 1975 VOLT gauge would've had VOLT at the bottom rather than the battery hieroglyph.
Someone retrofitted a later volt meter into that cluster.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: 1975 C10 with Volt Meter

Thanks guys, I thought it looked "newer", truck is pretty unmolested. It has a parasitic load problem.. Battery dies overnight. Probably get in there and find the original ammeter burned up and a short somewhere.

Re: 1975 C10 with Volt Meter

Both of the ammeter shunt wires will have a Bumble Bee inline glass cartridge fuse holder or something similar.
I'd start by removing those fuses.

Re: 1975 C10 with Volt Meter

Possible the clock is a retrofit as well. On my 75, that is where the Brake light went. I think clocks rated a separate SPID listing.

I had a parasite drain issue on my 75. Turned out it was from the alternator. One of the diodes had partially broke down. It still charged normally, but would also drain the battery after a few days.

I think the clock is stock, its a Silverado with the gauge package, gas gauge is where a tach would be. That is the next project. . . .

I think the first year 81-up needle are plastic, 80 down are stamped alloy needles for the gauges if not touched.
