Taking a pole. Which option is better. leaf springs, control arms, axle frame are freshly sand blasted

1) POR15 direct over metal

2) Nason Epoxy primer followed by Eastwood Extreme Chassis Black

Will this truck ever see road salt?? If so none of them will keep the rust away without yearly oil coat.

If its a fair weather driver i like option two. I have never sprayed POR tho.

For this time around i am going eastwood rust encapsulater and then eastwood chassie coat all sprayed.

I have had the same luck with POR and chassie saver but chassie aaver is alot cheaper. POR should get top coated

im not a big fan of nason...had several bad experiences with it ...probably not due to manufacture , but the store it came from...
but i like epoxy....but youll need clean metal to do it..
not a fan of poor15...

I have used POR-15 on both my projects and so far I have not had any issues. I know that it is not "sun friendly". I do not have any experience with the nason. I have a friend that is thinking of using something from NAPA, but not sure if it is the same thing or different.

I like Tractor Supply implement paint. Add a hardener to it and it dries rock hard, and is thick. I've used it on Jeep frames/springs/axles and it's a lot cheaper than POR15, much easier to touch up (also comes in rattle cans), and about as durable.

Be careful if you think about spraying POR 15. When I worked at YearOne, we were told to read all upsell on any POR 15 product we were selling. It said not to spray it as it is very hazardous. Rumor was that a customer sprayed it and the over spray he breathed dried in his lungs. Don't know if it was true or not, just always stuck with me.

There's no need to spray POR-15. Just brush it on. And wear long sleeves and gloves, cover your driveway or garage floor. It's extremely messy, as it's fairly thin.

Also, do NOT sand away all of your rust. I see people on projects over and over using POR over bare metal, AFTER they sanded away all the rust. And then they complain that they have problems with adhesion.

If you want your frame to have a satin shine, paint a topcoat over the POR. I used some Chassis Black from Eastwood over my POR and it looks pretty good.

I used KBS coating which is similar to POR-15. I used a wire wheel then a paint stipping wheel on an angle grinder to get the frame down to bare metal. Prepped with their degreaser, then the zinc phosphate metal etch. Then brushed on the KBS paint and top coated with Eastwood rattle can frame paint. I had no adhesion issues.

I used POR15 on my jimmy frame and suspension parts that were blasted and top coated it while it was still tacky with Eastwoods chassis black and it has held up really well and still looks great. My opinion is if you are going to use POR15 it needs a blasted surface to adhere properly. I would not use it on anything that was not blasted.

On my current project i am going to try SPI black epoxy on the frame, axles and suspension parts. SPI claims that if induced with the activator for a minimum of 4 hours it is UV safe for all under hood and frame parts.

My reason for using SPI epoxy is that it is easier and quicker to put on (spraying vs brushing), cheaper, and easier to touch up if needed.

I used KBS rust seal on my 2012 Sierra, Had the horrible wax coating from the factory. I wire wheeled it off and then used the degreaser and etcher supplied by KBS followed by the rust seal. Like Bloodhound I brushed it on and it leveled out. Did 2 nice coats on the frame and all the suspension pieces at the time. Looked very good and has held up Faded only where the UV can see it.

Not trying to steal your thread but why not use rust converter rattle can stuff? I can see frame off resto and por-15 and the like but what about the daily driver with rust on frame. Would the spray can rust converter stuff hold up over time??

When it comes to rust in rust country, nothing works. If you aren't in rust country then maybe you can keep it at bay. Rust converter has its place but paint doesn't stick to it very well. I did an experiment years ago with Nason Epoxy primer. I sprayed some on a rusty brake drum and left it outside for some years. That epoxy stuck to that rusty brake drum and never came off. When I use it on my vehicles it doesn't last like that. That brake drum isn't riding in a salt spray.

Moisture cured urethane is interesting stuff. They use that on bridges and is resistant to salt spray. I put some on a unprepped rusty quarter and it stayed nice for years. When I put it on my vehicle I had adhesion problems and it didn't last. My POR 15 experience was a failure too. Nothing really works except maybe Fluidfilm or oil spray. A problem with no solution.

some real world testing...
did my frame and susp, bottom of the box and cab, gas tanks etc in '010.
two coats por15 followed by two coats por chassis black


and today, 11 yrs later. holding up fine, even wit all the rocks my tires fling up.


for best results, use their cleaner and metal etcher. yes por has no uv inhibitors, but it won't break down, turns into a chalky grey color- similar to what my line-x bed liner did. but if your doing your frame, not something to worry 'bout.....unless you park your truck on it's roof...
