68 custom questions
Got a 68 custom, color 533 green and off white. Truck is very original and I am trying to keep the exterior looking very original. I am trying to find 68 factory wheel covers but those seem very rare so I put on a set of 69-72 ones for now.
I'm curious about a couple things: 1. Did mirror choice have anything to with CUSTOM z61 or z62 options? Are the mirrors in LMC repops of originals or was there never round or square chrome options from factory? 2. Anyone know a source of hood trim moulding NOS or used but good light green escutcheons for doors? Doesn't seem anyone makes these. 3. My interior was 603 and says green cloth trim. Any pics of what the original seat is supposed to look like? I've poured over several hundred threads especially the SPID thread. Lots of good info and knowledge here. Thanks all. |

Re: 68 custom questions
Z61 and Z62 did not dictate mirrors. Go here and find a pretty complete description of what the RPOs were-

Re: 68 custom questions
My 68 Custom (Anniversary Gold, although that had no doings towards mirror choice, I believe), had what I consider the standard mirror that attached to the door with the 3 screws, through the door with a backing plate inside the door. Had the round stem with one bend in it, and a round, approx 5" mirror head...there was NO mention or mirrors on my glove box decal...

Re: 68 custom questions
Your pickup sounds a lot like mine. I am wrapping up a resto that took me a few years. Here are some pics of a mostly-true-to-original restoration, including a reproduction of the factory seat cover. I think mine came with only a drivers mirror, and I don’t know what head was on it. The dealer installed some painted Jr west coast mirrors soon after it was sold. Chrome P03 ‘68 hub caps are almost impossible to find these days, and the market prices have responded predictably to the low supply. I haven’t found any 603 green door panel escutcheons being reproduced.

Re: 68 custom questions
The mirrors with three screw mount were standard on 67-70 trucks. Same as what most now call sport mirrors on 71/72. It was the bigger more useful truck style mirrors that were optional. The standard 67-70 mirror arms came painted-only. Chrome or stainless are reproductions. The thing I'm not positive on is whether mirror heads were chrome on higher trim levels. But I don't think they were

Edited: (Apparently Dropbox links are not supported here.) Mine came with wheel covers which are hard to find so I am currently running 69-72 ones. I see yours was factory AC? Any idea where you can get those green vents? Last edited by kjolivier; 05-25-2021 at 12:43 PM. |

Re: 68 custom questions
My vents are common reproduction black plastic, painted. We’ll see how long they hold up.

Re: 68 custom questions
Does anyone know which seat came with a Custom?
The woman at SMS says either A and C or B and C? @threequarter yours is a custom right? Last edited by kjolivier; 07-06-2021 at 05:20 PM. |

Re: 68 custom questions
My pickup is indeed a Custom. I got a different set of swatches for my quote from SMS. (Pic below) They used A and C (from your quote) to make my cover. I did not get swatch B from your quote—I think that one might be for a GMC?
