47-55.1 Installing fender anti squeak

The search function is not my friend today. I've looked, but apparently I don't know how to ask the question to get an appropriate answer. When the third question about installing anti squeak on fenders took me to my own thread, where I definitely have not installed anything, I decided to try it this way.

Does anyone have any directions on where to look for installation of the anti squeak on the front and rear fenders? I see a roll of anti squeak on LMC that may be for the rears, do you cut out pie shapes to make it fit the curves, or is there one that is set up for the rears? On the front LMC has some thing that goes between the inner and outer fenders, but then do you use the same stuff as on the rears where the front fenders bolt to the cab?

Since my trucks were in pieces when I bought them, there was no help there.

Are you talking fender welting like these examples or something more on the line of tape that doesn't have the bead? The ones I have done I have had to notch to get them to curve around the fender right. A hole punch a few sizes larger than the bolts lets you have some wiggle room around the bolts if you want to punch holes rather than cut notches for the bolts.

I am asking 1) what to use (I don't know what to call it) and 2) how do you install it? Do you cut holes in it, or does it come pre-punched, does it need to be "glued" in place to hold it while bolting the fender on, stuff like that.

I used the welt on my front and rear fenders. Here's a good "how to"

Using the weatherstrip adhesive keeps the welt from moving around and makes installing the fender much easier.

I used the fender welt with 3m whether stripping glue then I cut aLOT of pie cuts well worth the time.

I went to a upholstry supply house and bought welt cord and some naugahyde that matched the paint color on my truck.

I had and upholstry shop sew the welt so there was about a 2" tail on it. Like others have said, lots of pie cuts and holes for the fender bolts. There was enough material sticking beyound the fender lip in the fender well to pull on as I tightened the bolts to make a nice flush fit.

some welting is a solid plastic trim that you cut pie shapes for cornered areas, some is a naugahyde upholstery material with a solid plastic dowel in it for the "bump". some is the same as the naugahyde but the "bump" is made from a rope material. some stuff holds water, some doesn't. some have a hollow rope material, some are solid. some are paintable, some are not. some are wider than others and some have a bigger "bump". upholstery shops usually have a variety of widths and "bump" sizes. some are rubber so they bend easy and don't get brittle.
some spray glue would work well if you taped off the areas you don't want it to stick to. 3m 24 spray adhesive works well and has a variable width fan pattern. doesn't affect foam material and dries quickly. upholstery shops use it where I live. I have used it for upholstery, foam etc. there is a short time where it can be peeled away if the parts get stuck where they shouldn't as long as they weren't pressed together first.

i used double sided tape to install welt on the rear fenders of truk
with my truk's bed rail cut off, the fit and finish on the top of my fenders was iffy
i had access to a bunch of 1/4" double sided tape, no waiting for glue to dry
with tape i did minimal pie cutting, i could cut close to the tape without affecting the welt
and no holes for bolts, just big cutouts. tape was applied to fender side only
10 years and 38000 miles later the welting still looks good

I've never used it. Always figured it could hold moisture and promote rust between panels. I've never heard any squeaks, but then my exhaust is so loud I can't hear my wife shouting at me from the passenger seat ;-)

The moisture makes some sense, but the exhaust must not be loud enough if she still rides in it with you. I had to "do something" (her words) about the exhaust noise in the Cherokee to get my wife to ride in it at all.
