Under-bed gas tank without removing the bed or rails?

I was wondering if it is possible to install an aftermarket tank, or one from another vehicle under the bed, and not have to remove any rails. There's gotta be someone that has done this, I hope.
My plan would be to do the side fill, not the in-bed fill.

I checked out the Camaro tank; doesn’t look too bad. However, my bumper doesn’t have the license plate in the middle, I would have to modify it or get a different bumper.

I think I’ll just leave it for now, just wish I could get my gas gauge to work. I tried the resistor trick, but it still doesn’t read right.

I took measurements, made a pattern of the side panel, made the mounts for the sender and fuel pump, took these items to my local sheet metal shop and he made this “vessel “ for me, fuel tanks are forbidden due to %#=-+ lawyers……

That was smart. I found the same negative response from machine shops. I'll remember this.

I did a newer suburban tank in my 62 burb with bands to hold it up works good dident have to remove anything to install. Might give you an idea.

Just looked it was a 73-81 Blazer tank 25 gallon I moved the filler to the side because I wanted the straps to go from side to side because of the cross suport.

I put one in from a Jeep CJ hanging on some bed frame angle iron to the truck frame rails and got a fill setup from a Dodge P/U mounted just inside the box. It fills nicely. So far my problem is that I still need to get a sending unit to match the truck gauge. Currently I top it up about every 100 miles.

A mid 60s mustang tank slides between the rails nicely - to make it removable you would need to make the rear crossmember bolt in (which is what I had done) and I think this would allow you to fit and service the tank without removing the box. You may need to lift the rear of the box though to clear the main box cross member. I can send pics later this week if you are interested.

yes - its quite small - 16 gals.
i fitted a 7 inch tube style sender that is 0-30 ohm so connects with the stock gauge nicely.

You know that using the original gauge and a new sending unit it only needs a resistor to make it work. couple threads on here as a how to.

Yes, I read through those posts and tried the resistor upgrade. Still doesn’t work. I will have to remove the sending unit and check it outside of the tank.

Here's my early Mustang tank It's only about 16 gal., though. but it fits nicely between the frame rails. When I ordered my gauges I just got one to match the Mustang sender.

exactly the same as my setup - apart from I mounted to the lower frame - the mustang tanks fit up nicely and bolt to the rails along the perimeter.

This sender I linked needs no resistor to work with a stock guage. I use one myself and it does need to be set up to read properly, but it's easy to do. Measure the depth of the tank where it mounts, adjust the length of the sender and float arm as per the table in the directions and that's it....mount it up. I used the Jeep tank, I do have my bed off but as there is no trimming needed of the rails this 'should' be an easy fit with the bed on.

It is a side fill as well which should make things easier - only downside is capacity but that is not really a problem for me.

I think I may lower the Jeep tank and cut a hole for a sender so that I can get it back to the 0-30 ohm gauge.
