Do 67-72 front axles fit 73-87?

Will the front axles from 67-72 trucks fit under 73-87 trucks without modification or do the spring perches need to be moved or something?

Should bolt right up. There may be an issue about brake hoses on metric vs sae threads. but I am not sure on that one.

The axle tubes on the later trucks are slightly larger, so make sure you have the correct U-bolts. I don't recall the dimension or what year they changed, someone with a larger hardrive can answer that.

I'd use the calipers off my old axles...

I have a matching set of 73 1/2 ton axles for sale
they're 4.10 geared and a posi rear if your interested.
I'd take $200 for the pair. I also have a 3 speed trans
and part time transfer case for 50 bucks

The spring perches are the same for all the years you are asking about. I'm not sure about the tube diameter though.

I'm only planning on running 33-35" tires and I can beef up a D44 enough to handle those size tires just fine, D44 axles have more aftermarket than a corp. 10 bolt. I'd like to keep 1/2 ton running gear if I can just because it will save some trouble of changing stuff over to 3/4 ton. I won't be getting a D60 anytime soon anyway so I wouldn't be running anything stronger than a 44 with most likely a 12 bolt rear with lockright lockers.

I assume gov-loc 12 bolt rear with D44 front? I may be interested but am not sure when I could get them. Its quite a drive for me to Ohio, and i'm not sure when I could make the drive.

I don't need to beef it up to handle 33's but they were just saying its easier to get aftermarket parts to beef them up if I were to go up in tire size.

the later model D44s (73& up??) DO have bigger axle joints than the old stuff...

That said, I haven't broken anything yet with my 36s, either. But I do replace axle joints, every now and again, if I have the thing apart.

-Marty

PS: 73 12 bolt should not be half-ass gov-lock unit. Should be clutch type limited slip, or open.

I have a 12 bolt and 10 bolt front from a 79 right now, 12 bolt has stupid gov-loc and I need a open carrier so I can put a lunchbox locker in.

well...

I have a 72 K5 and have had a 83 K5. The first problem I see is the shock mounts are different my 72 has both shocks on the front of the axel, Not the 83
I'm willing to bet the spring pads would have to be moved, I say this becuase I got a Dana 60 out of a 72 or maybe a 70 Blazer and had to move the pads.
The reason I when with a Dana 60 is the old 12b had died, But the thing with the 12b is someone had put it in and when they did it they put blocks on top of the pads for springs to line up on I asked Stephen Watson at ORD about it and the answer was the older chevys had the pad in more than the later yr chevys.

But other than those things it will bolt right in :p If you like I have a 12b out of a 73 I could get the spacing for you if like. I could very well be wrong.
