Stock tach location?
Question: Where would a tach be mounted originally on the 55-59 trucks???? I have not found any info on the net so far, my only thought is that it would be left of the main gauge panel in the dash.....Anyone know the answer???

I have seen a GMC truck with a Tach in the dash next to the speedometer. And believe I saw a larger Chevy truck with a tach, and it was a clamp-on type on the steering column. My two cents worth

55-59 Chevys 1/2-3/4 T did not have an in dash tach option. The GMCs have a place for it but I,m not sure if there was a stock option for a tach in a GMC or where a dealer installed tach would be installed on a chevy.

I have seen a tack in the right hand spot on the GMC dash - but it was in a heavy truck. I don't think you could get them for 1/2 - 1 ton trucks. Part of the issue is that the tack was mechanical - like a speedometer. So it required a distributor with a mechanical tach drive on it. Not sure if those were available for the 249 I-6 or the Pontiac V8 engines. If you are running a Chevy small block, some of the early Corvette 265s had a mechanical tach drive distributor. Those are probably more rare than the GMC tach and $$$$!
I have seen on one occasion a Clock in the right hand opening. I expect that was a dealer installed option. But I have only seen one. I have an electric tach in mine. It took very little adaptation to remove the "GMC" logo plate and mount the tach. You just need to find one with a face diameter to match the bezel diameter. Take the bezel with you to the store. My tach is actually out of a 60's era Buick muscle car (console mounted). It looks a little funny with the Buick logo in a GMC instrument cluster, but it grows on you! -dch |

Tachometer was a GMC accessory item
I would have to say that on the GMC you are incorrect! You could get them in any GMC mounted in the dash where the GMC logo usually sits! The sales flyers from GMC tell me so!
Check this link and see for yourself My two cents worth, rico-bob

And tell me what time it is?
And yes GMC also had a clock option! Again from the GMC accessory book. The clock was an option that installed in the same location as the GMC logo and or the optional ELECTRIC (not manual) Tachometer.
my two cents worth.... rico_bob

Yup, I have printed out part of these off the web site. they print out in full color but are a bit hard to read. Dave's site is awesome place to get info on the 55-59 GMC. Be sure and check out that GMC Palomino (one-of-a-kind) built for the AutoRama back in 55 or 56. IT IS ONE COOL JIMMY! Thanks for the comments. rico
