going from steel to aluminum wheels

I am now running 17X8 steel rally wheels and they are vary heavy. How much would it help to switch to aluminum wheels if any? Speed, Breaking, gas mileage?

How much do the steel wheels weigh?

How much do the aluminum wheels weigh?

I'm going to say, none, none and none.

Re: going from steel to aluminum wheels

It makes a difference but how much depends on how heavy your currant wheels are and how light the new wheels are. You will see improvement in all areas though.

Re: going from steel to aluminum wheels

I have not weighed my old wheels and I have not picked out a new aluminum wheel yet.

Re: going from steel to aluminum wheels

You could save 5-10 lbs a wheel but you won't likely notice much gain from that on an old truck. If you just want a different style wheel, go for it. If you are trying to save gas, consider how much gas you would have to save to pay for the wheels.

I know it's not the same but I switched from 20" factory alloys and LT tires to 22" aftermarket wheels and AT/MT tires on my Silverado. I expected a decrease in mileage due to the heavier wheels and aggressive tire tread. It made little to no difference.

my main gole was to gain a little in the speed department. I guess that there are better ways to spend $1000 or more than to do it with new wheels.

Re: going from steel to aluminum wheels

I would say a negligible difference. You may notice it in braking more than anything but as said above unless you drive a lot you won't get the $ back in mileage improvement.
