1961 3 speed transmission questions

I am currently rebuilding the transmission in my truck. Needed to replace clutch, and trans would never shift in to 3rd gear (even using levers on transmission to bypass the shift linkages), so decided to look in to it. Have it all apart, can't say I see any reason. Few chipped teeth here and there. Nothing glaringly bad looking. Hoping when it goes back together it will shift in to third.

My real question is about the tail shaft housing. Mine is chipped at the yoke end, so I would like to replace it. But, it looks like I potentially have a passenger car trans? Potentially 5-6-7 chevy? Since I want to replace it anyway, I would like to find a "truck" 3 speed. Are there differences in the gear ratios? If not it doesn't really matter I guess.

To my understanding, the truck 3 speed tail shaft looks like this.

Re: 1961 3 speed transmission questions

The tail shaft of mine looks like this, with "scallops" at the yoke end, for lack of better description. Mine looked just like this one, complete with the "tin" around the rear seal. New rear seals do not look like that.

Re: 1961 3 speed transmission questions

Funny thing though. All I can find are three speed transmissions with the "scalloped" yoke end. Went and looked at a 1958 or 59 a few weeks ago, and low and behold appeared to have the same 3 speed as in my truck. I have to assume both trucks had passenger car transmissions swapped in at some point?? Also, if you look close, the rear seal on the 1958 trans appears to be leaking, like the new seal is not right. I have talked to at least a handful of people with 3 speeds sitting around, allegedly from trucks, and every single one has had scallops on the tail shaft housing. Anyone know which transmission tail shaft would be "correct" for a truck? Thanks.

Re: 1961 3 speed transmission questions

Well, I actually found a source for a seal with the "tin" around it, like was in mine. https://www.corvettecentral.com/c1-5...-3-or-4-531061

Website seems to confirm is for a 55 to 60 passenger car (or 55 to 62 corvette). I am happy I will be able to get the right seal so I can rebuild my trans, if I don't find a truck one. Does anyone know the differences between the passenger car 3 speed and the truck 3 speed? Thanks again.

Re: 1961 3 speed transmission questions

Thanks Dave. I will continue to hunt for a "truck" type transmission. In the first pic that I stole from elsewhere on the forum, the casting number looks like it ends with 20222. If you (or anyone else) has a chance, I would love to get the whole casting number.

Re: 1961 3 speed transmission questions

I never noticed until this thread that the transmission I pulled out of my truck was a car trans. I also believe the engine came from a car based on the numbers on it and the air cleaner that was on it when I got the truck.

I think the 3 speed overdrive transmissions might have the same difference. The middle picture is the trans I have in my truck that came out of a 65 C10. The last picture is one that came out of a 69 or 70 c10, but I don't believe it was original to that truck. I know, the pictures aren't great, but two of the three transmissions are back at home in storage
