86 Silverado value question

I have an 86 Silverado short bed 2wd. It’s all original with a 4.3 v6, turbo 400, power everything and A/C. Would it hurt the value of the truck doing a v8 swap? My dad bought the truck new in 86 and we have had it ever since. It’s a neat truck but it won’t get out of its own way on the highway.

Re: 86 Silverado value question

It seems strange that GM would use a th400 behind a 4.3. There may be some value in that rareness but these trucks are going for big money no matter what drivetrain is in them.

Re: 86 Silverado value question

Value only matters if you plan on selling. If the plan is to keep it, do what you want to it. You can always put the 4.3 on a roll around cradle in case someone in the future states "I would give you (offer you can't refuse) if only it had the original 4.3 in it." Until that time happens, enjoy the push in the back from a V8.

Re: 86 Silverado value question

Lol not a bad idea. I actually have an all aluminum LS6 382ci stroker sitting in a cradle I could toss in there. I was kinda saving that in hopes of building an 05 Silverado SS clone. Reg cab short bed bangin gears with a T56.

Re: 86 Silverado value question

Or - put a manual trans in it.

That should increase the fun factor a few fold.

This is very true. The other thing that's true is that you'll never get your money back out of upgrades. If your only goal is flipping the truck, you won't see a return on the cost of swapping the engine. Yes, the truck will likely sell for a little more, but it won't be as much as the parts cost to do the upgrade.

If you intend to flip the truck, focus on cleaning it good, and tuning it up as needed.

If you want to upgrade the truck for your own enjoyment, the sky is the limit.
