American Auto Wire Install - Help!
I just started the install of an AAW Classic Update kit in my truck. It's a little overwhelming. Does anyone one have any pictures of their in-cab install, maybe during and after? I am a little lost as to where to route everything. What wires did you have to run outside of the cab? The rear lights, and maybe the VSS?
Thanks!

Re: American Auto Wire Install - Help!
Rewiring a truck is a bigger undertaking than one would expect.
And routing the wires is the biggest challenge. Break it down into sections. Start with the taillight. Test the circuit when you are done. Move to the next item. I would likely do the front lights. Then the headlight switch to check every thing. Move on to the brake light switch. Will give you some confidence to move on and practice your crimps and such. Run the wires in the stock location when you can. You didn't mention if your motor is a SBC or if you have air. Incorporating the two harness together is a pain but after you are finished you will say it wasn't that bad! I have a Power Probe tool. It makes testing much easier. Don't need the fancy new versions just one of the first versions. Lets you apply a power and ground on any circuit. And has a built in breaker for when you make mistakes. Best of luck. Re: American Auto Wire Install - Help!
Here's a link to a wiring diagram - it will help a lot.
Take your time and be patient. It's a big job when you start, but it makes more sense as you lay it out. Pick one section to work on at a time - I started with the rear, then the front lighting, the engine bay next, and the cab last.

Re: American Auto Wire Install - Help!
Thanks everybody for the wiring diagrams. I think I'm good there I just was hoping to see how people have routed the wires under the dash and how they've secured them.

Re: American Auto Wire Install - Help!
I got these on Amazon;
HATSBI. Multipurpose Magnetic Cable Zip Tie Mounts Neodymium Magnets Black (12 Pack). 12 Black Cable Zip Ties Included. Cable Holder for Cable Management. Holds Standard Zip Ties/Cable Ties. The factory stuff is somewhat of a mess. Only loom retainers are underside of the dash pad. |

Re: American Auto Wire Install - Help!
I used split sleeve wiring protector pretty much everywhere. I secured it with small zip ties at intervals and anywhere a wire leaves the sleeve. It keeps thing looking pretty neat.
I don't have an under dash picture handy right now, but this one shows what the wire sleeves look like.

No, I was able to find an assortment of hoses from a 98 Silverado and a 98 S-10 and massage them into the configuration I needed.

Re: American Auto Wire Install - Help!
I try to hide the wiring as much as possible. At the firewall I ran the front and rear harness wires along the frame rail.
Make sure you have good grounds. Battery to the engine/frame. Frame to the radiator support. Frame to the rear tail lights. I regards to the VSS wiring depending on the location you choose for the LT1 ECM I would run the VSS wiring behind the back of the engine. I also like the split braided wire covering. Pic of the engine bay on my 68. |
