Factory Cardboard Gas Tank Cover Pictures
I've noticed that there have been a few threads about these cardboard covers over the years but I can't find one that shows how the originals fit around the tank. I noticed that the repop ones have some tabs that look like the should "tuck in" somewhere. Does anyone have some pics of originals that they could share? I'd imagine it would need to be from a low mileage survivor since they tend to deteriorate and sag over time.
There's a video on YouTube, https://youtu.be/KAykYCYSb8Q, where someone shows how to fold and staple a repro cover together but when he installs it, it doesn't seem to fit too well. I think the guy may have placed it over the tank upside down. Not surprising since he may not have had an original and the reproduction covers come without instructions. Re: Factory Cardboard Gas Tank Cover Pictures
I went through the Factory Assembly Manual page by page and only came up with two (non-carpeted) gas tank cover illustrations. The "flat" pic looks like what is currently being sold for the 67-72 pickups but I'm not sure that the "assembly" illustration is of the same cover or for the 67-72's since it was located in a different part of the manual. I do know the manual tends to jump around quite a bit though.
According to the "assembly" pic it looks as though the side with the three tabs is the top. If so, the guy in the YouTube video put his in upside down which could account for the poor fit. Here are the pics I've come across. Reproduction, Flat Illus. and Installed Illus. Last edited by cericd; 02-17-2022 at 09:13 PM. |

Re: Factory Cardboard Gas Tank Cover Pictures
Just noticed that in the "assembly" pic that those three tabs are folded over between the top edge of the tank and the back of the cab.
Have any of you seen the #3 clip mentioned in the illustration? Last edited by cericd; 02-18-2022 at 01:06 AM. |

So the first Assembly Manual picture would be of the inside of the cover. I have never seen a clip on any of the ones I have removed. If they had fallen off and I found them on the floor I probably wouldn't have figured out where they came from. LockDoc

Re: Factory Cardboard Gas Tank Cover Pictures
Ah, I see, because of the placement of the two “tabs” at the bottom. Got it.
