Keeping a project moving.
I often end up waiting for parts. With the current situation just finding them in stock can be an issue. I do all my parts shopping on the internet and some companies are not honest on what is in stock. The side indicates it's in stock till you pay for it then you get a 3-week delivery time.
That said I like to keep handy stuff around so I can make substitutions. Some substitutions are better than the claimed "correct part". Some are compromises to keep the job moving. So, I have lots of bulk parts in plastic containers. Stuff like star washer and cotter pins. Today I replace my speedometer cable. Forgot to order a new firewall grommet. There was no getting the original off without destroying it. It has an internal metal piece in the grommet and I couldn't get it off. So, do I wait a week for a single part that shipping would cost more than the part? Nope, I go to the bulk grommets. The kind with a solid center than can be modified and cut a couple slits in it and install it. BTW the factory grommet is much larger than the hole. The hole is one inch. The grommet I used was 25MM. Worked perfectly. |
