spindle/hub problem????

Need help. I have a 69 1/2 ton C-10 and have spent all day trying to fine front wheel seal and inner bearings.
The hub is a 6 lug and surely must not be a 69. When I went to autozone the seal they had was too big in dia. Then when they did find one to work it was for a 72 3/4 ton........but it did work. Once I got the seal in and tried to install on the spindle the bearing would not go. It's a nates hair too small. I even tried some force and it would not go. After going to three different stores no one could help me find the right bearing.........and we tried about 4 different ones. The outter bearing appears that it will work so one store used it to try to determine what I had and everything pointed in the direction of what they had been offering.
THe only number on the hub is a "2".
Any idea what I may have? I would really appreciate any help to get me past the dump-A ...feeling I have right now. Feel free to question me more.
Thanks

The only seal that the hub has is the inner seal. If you are talking about replacing the inner bearing, you must replace it befor you press the seal in. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

RIght......I installed the inner bearing then I pressed the seal.
And oh......the dumb-A.. feeling I have is that I disassembled this about a month ago and was so confident that it was a true 60 hub I trashed the old inner bearing.

I guess that I must have missunderstood what you were asking. Is your spindle gaulded? Did you try a bearing on the outside chance that you have a 71-72 front spindle? This is a tough one without being right there. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Wes,
Spindle looks really good.I had the store try everything from 68 to 72 with no luck. It's been a tough one for me. Any way I could tell if the spindle or hub is 72? I do know the guy who had the truck said at one time the truck was lowered but when I bought it the truck was back to stock.

More info.......each time the stores would ask me if it was std. or heavy duty and if with booster or not. THe real strange thing is that each time they would offer me a seal that was bigger in dia. that the outer part of the hub where the bearing goes but the bearing offered would fit the hub but not the spindle.

Wink

They ask you about heavy half or standard half, because later model chevys had the heavy half option. So their computers are probably set up that way. 67-72 there was just one half ton. Sounds like to me you need to measure your spindle and take that demention to a specialty bearing shop along with your hub. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Clean up the old seal, then get a magnifying glass and start looking around the inner edge of the seal. Somewhere you'll find a group of numbers, part of which indicate the brand name and part of which are the part number. There are a lot of common seal sizes, but you have to know how to find them. Chicago Rawhide is a major manufacturer. Their seals will have a C-R on it. Timken may also make seals.

When I said clean, I meant CLEAN! Absolutely no grease or dirt can be on it. The edge I am talking about is the part that didn't touch anything. If that part of the seal is only 1/16 of an inch thick, those numbers will be on that 1/16th think edge. That is why you'll need a magnifying glass and why it has to be clean. Trust me. Unless the seal has been damaged, or you threw it away, you should be able to take that series of numbers to a parts store (like Napa), or to a bearings and drives supplier for industrial stuff, and get a new seal. If all else fails, take the nasty seal to them and they can find it for you.

Now, in that I used to work for Auto Shack, which became Auto Zone, don't go back to them. They generalize stuff too much for our benefit as we work on older trucks. If it don't move, they won't stock it.

THanks Chevloroy. I did something I normally don't do on this.......I trashed the old before trying the new. I even went to NAPA and they spent 1/2 hour going through catologs.....but they did recommend I go to a old chevy guy her in town and he would be able to figuar it out. THere is also a bearing mfg. one town over so I have the option too. This has be something I have never run into before. Thanks again.
