Getting a big block ( accessories question)
Like the title sayes Im getting a big block from a old grain truck for my 71 GMC. 366 tall deck low reving torque monster. Anyway I don't believe I'll be able to reuse the accessories on that grain truck in my 71. I was looking through old forum post and a guy got some adapters to be able to run 88-94 sep belt set up
I don't want to run serp set up. Dont see the real point. My question is could I use the adapters to instead run a serp set up but to run my old sbc accessory brackets and stuff. No power steering or ac. Just an alternater. But with plans to go to power steering at some point. A picture of said adapter brackets

Re: Getting a big block ( accessories question)
If you have access to those accessory plates get them and use them. Your going to need a double pulley on the crank balancer to accommodate the future power steering pump. Otherwise, just use what you got for the alternator...Got any pics of your motor with alternator?

Re: Getting a big block ( accessories question)
I just got through sourcing basic pulleys for a sb for my camaro. I found that Chevrolet still has access to "some" of them. The obsolete ones were sourced from ebay motors. I hate to say it, but your best bet will be to find someone with the accessories you intend to put on there and then hope you can get the numbers. Bracketry and pulleys can be a real pain as Chevy changed every time they could.

Re: Getting a big block ( accessories question)
The pic shows a small block, the 366 is a big block. With that understood, practically nothing on that small block will work on that 366. I'm not familiar with the old school 366 and 427 tall deck motors except that they are unique unto themselves such as motor mounts and stands as most were manual transmissions. Where and how you mount that beast is going to govern what and where you locate the alternator and power steering. I have a 427 (MK-4) block sitting on refabricated small block stands to hold that block forward enough to utilize a 6" tail housing 400 Turbo on the factory crossmember. I had to shorten the propeller driveshaft 1" instead of 3". The alternator is mounted off the water pump on the right side with the power steering pump on the left, each has their dedicated crank pulley. Those tall deck truck motors have a unique water pump that may or may not have the provisions for those accessories like the MK4 blocks...If your committed to using that 366 then I'd use as much of the brackets and accessories designed for that motor. A 454 would be so much easier and run circles around that 366..."Jus sayin"

Re: Getting a big block ( accessories question)
I would do some research on using a tall deck. I believe you will have exhaust issues but not certain. You have to use a tall deck distributor which limits your choices, but I believe there is an HEI for that. Seems like the thermostat housing is also unusual on a tall deck. As far as mounts and bellhousing all that is "regular" big block so not that big a deal-same as a usual BB swap. I agree with using the big truck accessories if all you need is an alternator and p/s pump.

Re: Getting a big block ( accessories question)
That 366 will be a PITA. Tall deck motors in general are hard to work with. I had a killer tall-deck 427 .070 stroked to 496 with an 8-71 blower on it. I sold it because exhaust was going to be so expensive and built a low deck 427.
If you have to have it, try to get all the parts you can from the donor. If you want get out cheap, keep the SBC.
