What is this chopped tube sticking out of this

Hi. Can you tell me if this is normal and okay? I'm replacing the wiring on a truck I just bought and I keep finding random odd looking cut pieces. What is this random cut tube. And for that matter, can you educate me? What is the part it's sticking out of? To the left of the picture is the front of the truck

It's the other end of the hose you asked about in your previous post - the vent tube for the differential.

I think that's the vent tube for the front diff.

I would also think you would want that longer and higher on the frame, especially if you think you might find yourself rolling through a water crossing

Its wild that the one I asked about the other day is a yellow curly 10 foot hose and this one is a 6 inch hose. Is there a recommended length? Also I am assuming I should put a male-male adapter on this one and then add a few feet of hose to that and mount it up high. When mounting it at an elevation do I also point the last few inches down a little?

Ohhhhh,,,, gotcha. The other pic, with the short black 6 inch hose cut and mounted to the frame. That makes sense. Thanks!

Thanks for cluing me in to what this even is. I went and looked up differential info and found some stuff I'm glad to learn:

The differential vent tube is there to vent if the differential is overfilled with oil or becomes too hot.

If your differential seals are leaking then your vent tube is probably clogged.

The vent tube should be mounted above the differential with the end of the tube slightly lower than the majority length of the tube.

The vent tube should be capped with a check valve.

Pull the tube off of the differential to stick a poker into the differential to see if there is an oil glob blocking the vent nipple.

While the tube is off, blow through the tube towards the check valve to make sure the tube is free of blockage.

Change your differential fluid at recommended intervals.

Replace your differential cover seal at recommended intervals.
