abandoned leftover parts bolted to truck
Edit: Based on the advice in this thread and upon further investigation, it is connected and needed.
While crawling under my truck I found this unused part and I don't know what it is. My truck is a 1971 automatic K10. Is this a piece leftover from the manual transmission? Last edited by K10-Kansas; 01-01-2023 at 02:26 PM. |

Re: abandoned leftover parts bolted to truck
Sure is, looks like a floor shifter for a 3 speed.

Re: abandoned leftover parts bolted to truck
Yep, to my untrained eye, that looks like partial remains of manual shift linkage.

Re: abandoned leftover parts bolted to truck
Thanks. Sounds like you're sure of that. In that case can you tell me, any guesses on why it's disconnected?
I bought this truck out of state. Had it towed to a shop in the state it was in and had them put in a brand new engine and automatic transmission. It is a 4x4 but I'm working on wiring and haven't tried to put it in 4 wheel drive. The cab is 71 GMC 2WD C10 manual transmission. The frame is unknown but likely a 77 4x4 long bed cut to short bed. So, this was someone's way of making a long bed a short bed, removing manual and switching to automatic transmission, and going from a 2wd to 4x4. |

Re: abandoned leftover parts bolted to truck
Give us a bigger pic of the bottom of the motor/trans area. No closeups.
Just to see what exactly you’re working with. |

Re: abandoned leftover parts bolted to truck
Can you get back under the truck and make absolute sure it is "disconnected"? Preferably with pictures. It'd be nice to see linkages hanging into outer space and not hooked up to anything.
I don't belong in this thread, I've never touched a 4x4 in my life, but the picture in post #2 makes it look like it is connected to "things". What those things are I don't know. |

He mentions in post #7 that the frame maybe a '77 4x4 frame. So that would explain that. LockDoc

Re: abandoned leftover parts bolted to truck
I saw that and thought to myself it sounds like he isn't sure what he has. I'd like to see how the 71 cab is cobbled onto the 77 frame. Also (not much to go on with pic provided), but the trans pan looks suspicious---like maybe a 700

Re: abandoned leftover parts bolted to truck
The np203 is not necessarily a bad thing. I happen to like them well enough to put one in my 72 project. Fitment in the 72 frame is an issue though that I will still have to overcome. Also, mine has the part time aftermarket kit installed. I have no idea how well it will work, but shfting it and turning the shafts, it feels good.that is an option when you get ready, or you may have already drove it.

Re: abandoned leftover parts bolted to truck
Frame, crossmember and t-case does not look like my 72 K10.

Re: abandoned leftover parts bolted to truck
As stated, this is a 2wd body swapped onto a post-72 GM 4wd chassis that was shortened. The NP203 is probably original to the chassis.
My question is what transfer case shifter do you have now? You said there is wiring to do so you haven't tried putting it into 4wd. There is no wiring involved in that, other than an indicator light. So you have a shifter? Is this the underside of that you are showing? If you have a lever try shifting.
