Another 327 4bbl thread for the gurus...
Parted out a 68 3/4 ton 2wd chevy many years ago and pulled this out of it. Had a TH400 in it also. Engine appears basically untouched and some paperwork it had looked like about 70,000 miles on the truck when i got it. Alot of date codes look close, but numbers don't match up very well. Any thoughts or insight? Would GM have put these parts on a truck engine?
Block: 3914678. Date G 2 8. front pad. VO705YV (302 327 350 car or truck) (The YV comes back as 68 327 c-10 with m/t) Intake: 3927184. Date F 21 8 (68 350 car) Carter Q-jet: 7028213 Date E8 DY. (68 car w/ man trans) Dist: 1111297 Date 8C21 (68 327 car 275hp auto) Alt: 1100794 (68 car) All of the TH400 kickdown parts are still present. Also, any ideas on all of the coolant lines? One bypass from pump to intake and one from the lower drain on the block but can't remember what it was ran to...

Re: Another 327 4bbl thread for the gurus...
Not sure on the lower by pass, but the upper one would be correct for trucks as long as the hole out of the pump is 3/4". Usually the by pass up there was seen on hi performance engines. Z/28s used the same water pump originally but they had a 1/2" outlet on top of the pump.
Will say its odd seeing on a quadrajet manifold as typically the intake would have a provision in the intake to have a little short by pass. The carb could have been swapped at one point and they just wanted to make sure it was the same year carb. Something tells me that the truck it was in was swapped to a TH400 at somepoint, probably at a dealer due to all the correct kickdown down stuff. Only thing that makes since most of the codes come up as a manual trans setup. The front pad was not stamped until the motor was assigned a chassis. Here is a link to a little engine dress history, while its Camaro specific most of the plants operated the same. http://camaros.org/enginedress.shtml

Re: Another 327 4bbl thread for the gurus...
It's a 68 block because the 3914678 casting was a one year block casting.
3914678....302.....68....2.bolt main..Z-28 Camaro 3914678....327.....68....2 bolt main 3914678....350.....68....2 bolt main G28 =July-02-1968 An Early Chevy Small Block Casting Date Code Block casting dates are alpha-numeric, where the first character is a letter that equates to the casting month followed by a one or two digit day code and a single or two digit year code. If the year code is a single digit you'll have to use other block identification codes to confirm decade. A=January B=February C=March D=April E=May F=June G=July H=August I=September J=October K=November L=December Sure appears to be an early transplant from another vehicle. Looks like you nailed it out of the shoot. |

Re: Another 327 4bbl thread for the gurus...
My 327s came from a '68 C/20 with TH400 and was all complete and original. Yours should have a steel crank, mine does. Maybe the motor was swapped into the automatic truck from a manual '68.

Re: Another 327 4bbl thread for the gurus...
And to add, heads are 3911032 F 27 8. (307 327 car or truck)
So now i am wondering if the engine was swapped at some point or if it came down the line with some miss-matched parts all of which have similar date codes? Maybe the dealer did some work? The intake came up as only a 68 350 car, but the date codes are close.

Re: Another 327 4bbl thread for the gurus...
The intake is actually a early 69 model, yes it was cast in 68, but its a June date and my books and search show you are right its a 350 only intake (since 327's were dropped in 69) So the intake was swapped at some point in its life, if on purpose or accident who knows?
There is a small chance the motor got some oddball parts. I have pictures somewhere of a 67 Camaro my grandfathers cousin bought brand new, it was a 210hp 2bbl 327 and it had camel humps on it from the factory.

Re: Another 327 4bbl thread for the gurus...
I believe 327s were made through '69.

They were. My parents had a 69 Chevy wagon with a 327.

Re: Another 327 4bbl thread for the gurus...
That's in the US. Canada had them in '70, possibly later.

Re: Another 327 4bbl thread for the gurus...
They were dropped in Jan/Feb of 1969. So early 69s (Aug-Dec 68 built) cars had 327's, the 307 replaced it. It was a running mid year change.
