Odd problem where the buzzer is always on if headlights on
Hi all. I have the door chime on my truck, where a loud chime plays when you accidentally leave the headlights on. Got that one installed in the factory spot instead of that horrible screeching sound the older chevys came with. Anyway the loud chime stays on the whole time the headlights are on.
This started happening 3 days ago, and I'm hoping someone here might know what could cause this. No matter what you do, if the headlights are on, it's blaring the chime at you. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you. EDIT: It's an 87 model if that matters |

Sounds like a grounding issue. A bad ground will always make the functions act goofy. In this case, says the lights are on when they are not.
Next, it could just be a bad buzzer. Try swapping it out with a known good part. If the known good part still buzzes, then that would rule out a bad part and it’s most likely a bad ground.

This will happen when the instrument cluster is not plugged in. Check your cluster plug to make sure it is making contact with the printed circuit. It is a tough reach but you might want to see if you can reach behind the cluster and wiggle the plug.

Thanks! I've been having trouble with all the gauges lately, except the speedo which is cable driven. Sounds like you're onto something here.

Well it's more of a chime. I'm glad it's not that original angry buzzing sound. Like a pissed off cicada. I'd be curious to know what all sounds you can get, to plug into that factory slot. I vaguely remember someone talking about how some older cadillacs had a really cool sounding door chime. |

Re: Odd problem where the buzzer is always on if headlights on
TKCR,
I've read a few of the chime threads and I pulled mine out of my 82 (top left of the fuse panel). It had 4 pins and the socket doesn't look as if it can receive a 6 pin or 7 pin module. I've searched the forum and online and do not see anything about a 4 pin module. Do I have the correct module or is it somewhere else? sorry I didn't take a pic but can add it later thanks Eric |
