Chemo or surgery
I mechanically stripped old repaint, filler primer, and org paint and primer from a hood with unknown history. These pin holes were not visible prior to strip.. They are along the back edge of hood in an area about 6x12 inches. I can flood the back side with converter and coat top with same. Then prime and fill making it a easy for me to chemo repair. The paint will be nice driver quality. Not show quality and 10 yrs max. Or is it a lost cause and will need surgery inside of 4 yrs anyway?
Sky is pretty blue so it is tinting the photos. Thank you for opinion. |

Re: Chemo or surgery
I'm thinking surgery or transplant another hood.

Re: Chemo or surgery
I have another hood, front damaged, so this area should be pretty good for a donor part making the shape easy. The old saying when in doubt cut it out I guess is a smarter way to go.
Just hoping to avoid blending my crappy weld joints. |

Re: Chemo or surgery
Time for a different hood. I'm guessing there are other spots just waiting open up.

Re: Chemo or surgery
OK just my 2Cents. Figure in Couple things. What's rest of truck like? And is my budget OK with buying more stuff. Your decision. Now with that said, if you have the skills and wanna splice in new piece go for it. Or, I've done this when my money was funny. Put a copper heat sink behind hole and stitch it with a mig . Then, right away while it's hot put a dolly behind it and hammer flat from the top.
Worse case scenario it's bad already and now it's worse. Good rust inhibitor on back if all comes out well. If it's a budget driver consider flat clear as it's more forgiving.

Re: Chemo or surgery
The truck is is better than average condition. I banged up the original hood when the truck got away from me in the garage from a bad starter safety switch. Totally my fault. The edge of work bench of course hit the the nose at worst possible height and killed an exceptionally good condition hood. Bent the front frame section of the hood and it was not something I could get back. I picked up 2 hoods for 100 bucks. The hood in question was very straight but was left out I bet on grass. The other hood has couple dings. I took the worst one relative to rust and am attempting to bring it back. Figure I can practice some on this one and if it turns out ok, then I use. If not, I have the second hood in much better rust condition and work on the dings. And if that doesn't work I'll drop a few more bucks on a hood that is in better shape with some experience under my belt as to how body work may not be my thing. This truck is a good driver that I often dig deep into just the fun of it. Being retired, I like to have a project to keep busy with. This hood has definitely done that.

Re: Chemo or surgery
Problem with that being along the back edge of the hood is you won’t be able to get a dolly on the under side because of the inner bracing. It will make low spots when you weld. Without being able to get the dolly back there you won’t be able to stretch it back out.

Re: Chemo or surgery
Yup and I already made the cut and welds with some defection in my result. Last month I did 2 14" or so long sections on the top rail of the bed where a tool box rotted the bed rail. The only other area of rust on the truck. Same issue of no access and the patches came out really nice. Better than expected for a first timer. The hood has obviously stretched a bit to my disappointment. I saw this cool tool on a few youtube vids. A stretching disc. Thought I'd give it a shot. Arrives today from Amazon for 25 bucks. This hood project may not be the most efficient method but I am having fun trying making it work. Slow and steady, and I most of the time get things to come out ok. I knew going in this was going to be a big bite. No time table, and no one to please but myself, helps take away any stress over the project.

It would be fun to see pictures of where you are with the project and see what tools you've used so far.

Re: Chemo or surgery
I took mine apart to work out the dents . A good bodyman might be able to fix your original hood it’s really not all that hard . First I removed the inner brace did all the metal work then welded it back together . Then did the body filler
Would work for the rear part of the hood as well
