Re: Painter recommendation N CA
Sorry I can't help you. I too am looking for a painter in the Modesto area. Everybody wants to make a quick buck on insurance work. Let me know if you find a fish and I'll do the same for you.

Re: Painter recommendation N CA
It will be difficult to find a shop that will do a complete repaint in the Ca. Much less, work on a classic. My friend still does but he will retire in the near future (work for him). While he was out with a broken hip I visited at least 15 shops nearby for quote on my 94 complete after a rearend I experienced. Only two got back to me at 12-15k. Minor damage I fixed myself and I supplied the parts. Truck was almost a scuff and shoot.
Found one place that did it for just under 8k with me doing the disassembly and most of the re-install. Clear is already coming off less than 5 years later. We did my 72 with single stage paint I obtained from another state. Was expensive but I have more confidence that the paint will last. Paint and body in Ca is expensive and the products kind of suck. The paint and materials costs are exaggerated and cost of business is high. Hope you find someone that can help you out.

Re: Painter recommendation N CA
Perhaps Northern Nevada, I wonder if he's got his business going yet? I've been meaning to ask.
The guy is so MATICULOUS, and because of that, he says he'll never straighten a truck bed's inside again.

Re: Painter recommendation N CA
I used this place in Newcastle, CA about two years ago to repair and repaint several panels on my truck. Despite the name, they work mostly on classics.

Re: Painter recommendation N CA
It's all BIG $$$ now days, A gallon of red base coat is $1000.00 now
A gallon of good body filler is almost $100,00 Sadly that's just the tip of the iceberg |

Re: Painter recommendation N CA
So I don't know if it would work for you but a local body shop "let" me do all the block sanding both filler and primer prior to final paint. I was under their supervision. The owners words were after I sanded something was "keep sanding".
They sprayed the sealer and base coat clear coat. I did the color sanding staying away from the edges. The body shop finished the edges. And then they did the cut and polish. Started out with this and ended up with this. See pics. Body shops make their money from insurance work. Can't blame them. |

Re: Painter recommendation N CA
Well, he body/painted this
One thing he won't do is detail a bed again. Or in other terms, he'll only do minimal body work inside a bed. Apparently once was enough. He's the new owner of VCM in Carson City. He's setting up starting next week. So I wouldn't call until then.

Re: Painter recommendation N CA
Just a thought contact local car clubs to see if they can recommend a shop.
