283 question
A friend of mine has a 283 when we took the intake manifold off we saw a little cylinder type thing that is on the back of the block in the lifter valley and has a hose that comes out behind the distributor and plugs into the carb. What is it and can it be removed. Thanks

I think that is called a ventilator, they used those before the invented pcv valves

This thing was in the lifter valley? I mean, it was completely enclosed when the intake manifold was on the engine, right? How did the hose route through the block or intake to make its way to the carb?

in went to the back of the block than behind the distributor there was like a 45 degree angle with a nipple and the hose connected to that and screwed into the back of the carb

Yep, mines got one a them. Thats how you vent the block with sealed valve covers. If you take it out and plug it just remember your going to have to vent (pcv) your valve covers.

that brings back memories of my first car, a 57 chev i drug out of the woods. my dad said if i was going to learn how to drive i was going to need to know how cars worked. that old 283 was my first tear down

they were used up to about 64-66 depending on the make and model. PCV I belive was government mandated on 67 up??memory aint perfect would have to dig out books. but the first PCV showed up in 64 on certain vehicles,dont remember which, would require them books agian and I aint walkin out to the shop.

There is a down draft tube that connects to the block there that vents the engine since there was no breather caps on the valve covers. Kind of hard to find the original tubes too. It is a neat little part though - like a muffler that keeps the oil in the motor and lets the air pass out. I wondered what it was when I first found one lying around.

I never could figure out what the heck that thing was, very interesting piece of redundant technolgy though, especially when it is just easier to put a hole and a vacum line into the valve cover.

The old draft tube (the tube that dripped oil onto the driveway) went into the ventilator baffle until the PCV systems came out in the 60's. After that, the vacuum line went from the vent via an adapter to the PCV valve at the back of the carb. Return air came in from the oil filler cap (front of intake manifold) on both systems.
