Sub Box? Help me please - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Is there a specific amount of space a 12 inch sub needs to get the max amount of bass? I got 2 12's and a 600 watt amp and I hit like there 6 1/2's lol. 2 12's should be hitting hard. the way mine is setup is like so. The length of the box is the lengght of space behind the bench seat ok. Theres 5 sections to this box

1. On each side I have 1 6x9

2. After them I had the 2 12s

3 then the amp in the middle

So it's l--6x9--/12' sub//AMP//12'sub/--6x9--l

Each speaker has its own enslosed "box" now....it is not sealed in the inside but it is sealed on the outside. Given the amount of lengtth i have to work with....i figure I didnt have a big enough compartment for my subs to get the max bass. does any have specs on wat will be good for a 12 inch sub. The amp can be moved to a different place...and the 6x9s I am trying to come up with a way to make kicker panels to hang above my head in the 2 back corners...;..still workin on that one :/ lol. So any info on the pace needed for a 12 inch sub would be great guys. If there isnt any....and i just made a crappy box....let me kno HAHAH :P Thx again guys!!!

12 inch subs need big boxes. Make sure you have the correct box type for the speakers (sealed or non sealed w/ a port). They will sound like crap the wrong way. I can tell you know, your boxes for them are too small.

I've got designs for a box for a set of 10 - 12" subs if you want them. Should fit into our trucks no problems, and they have the proper amount of cubes for the subs, rockfords anyways

let me start off by saying that there is more to designing a subwoofer box than you EVER IMAGINED.

Hands down your best bet is to get specs from the manufacturer of the sub.

You can have some pretty small boxes if they're built right (sealed enclosures) but most people build vented enclosures which, by design, need a lot more cubic feet..

just this weekend I built a box for two 10" subs that I had sitting around collecting dust.. The box is mostly complete I just have to get some rca cables and a power lead, and I'll hook it up. I went with the manufacturers specs (MTX).. included with the subs were several spec lists for vented, sealed, & bandpass enclosures..

Mike isn't joking, you'll be amazed to the math and such that goes into this... Like I said, my box which is based of Swervin Ervin's designs are designed for Rockford 10 or 12 inch subs...

Another thing- if your subs sound really really weak, you might have them wired to the amp wrong. You need to find out what kind of wattage your amp puts out, and at how many ohms.. then find out how many ohms your speakers are, and then there is a very specifc way they must be wired. If you give the specs/part numbers of your equipment, I will help you out

I got a guy at school who just threw a rather big sound system into his car, but it makes next to no noise, so I'm taking some tools with me and I'll rewire it for him at lunch, I know for a fact that he hooked his subs up backwards

Well... to get a sweet spot with my infinity I built my box for 1.1 cubes. And thats only 1 ten.

2 12's should have atleast 1.5 cubes each. Keep the box sealed, its gonna be tough to get a ported box to work correctly or sound good with the thin wedge shape.

Keeping seperate chambers isnt a good idea. What you'll want to do is put a brace in the center to give it tighter, less boomy bass. Just make it look like swiss cheese so the air can move freely.

Theres a calculator for finding out the cubes inside the box. Give me the dimensions for how wide and tall you can go. I believe the deepest you can go in the bottom is around 7 1/2 to 8 inches. The top is about 5 or so. I cant really remember.

sounds like he has one out of phase. if you hook them both up backwards it wont hurt, just dont hook one up backwards (out of phase) or one will defeat the other.

close box size is .8cf for 8" , 1 cf for 10", 1.5cf for 12" & 2cf for 15"...corn

One more Question.....There a SMALL....Small Tear in each sub woffer...not in the cone itself but onthe black lining. oes that hunt sound...and can it be sealed with silicone?

If this is a system just for boom and just to make due with what you got then you can "glue" those tears back together with clear nail polish. Silicone will probably work too, but I've only ever used nail polish. It could and most probably will affect the sound, but how much depends on the size of the tear and the patch area. You mostly have to be worried about it ripping later. If this isn't for competition or for show then just glue it and run it.

First thing, I had a tear in one of my rockford subs just as you said. I went to a dive shop and got a wetsuit repair kit(neopryn type). It sealed the hole with no problems. Nothing like putting a drill through a brand new sub. Second thing, Russell can you send me those dimensions for the sub box. Does it allow for your seat to be all the way back? I got two rockford HE2 10" I would love to put in the truck, but I need the leg room too. Thanks

I based them on the information I found on www.73-87.com but made it so it would work with a bench seat. I'm not sure about clearance, I never ended up building the box...

My best friend has 2 solo barix 12's. They hit SOOOO hard!! They are in a separated box with no porting. Each sub has 1 1/2 cubic feet.
