Napa and Kragen auto parts says.........
......Both Napa and Kragen Auto parts have told me when I have previously bought a replacement Quadrajet and now today a air filter that in a 1971 C-10 a 350 4V didn't exist....only a two barrel. My underhood emission sticker sticker says 350 4 barrel right on it. I got this as a unmolested truck with 85k miles from the orginal owner so I know it wasn't changed. The truck was assembled in 5/71 so it couldn't have gotten a early production 72 engine package. Any ideas? It's not a big deal......just wondering if any of you have run into the same thing.

They are morons......the 350 came standard with a 4bbl carb! If anything you had to special order a 2bbl in a C10 truck. I would think at least napa could have got that right.....only the 307 had a 2bbl.

Typical--those clerks were flipping hamburgers last week--now they're expert mechanics. If the customer doesn't know exactly what he wants at those places, he's in big trouble.

I guess you should be glad you dont have a caddy motor in your truck.

Sometimes it helps to tell them you have a same year GMC rather than a Chevy. I think it was Advance auto that showed that I should have a long water pump on my '72 Chevy, but their books showed the correct part for a GMC.

Two weeks ago I went to kargen for an engine gasket set and the guy helping me told me that they don't sell a complete gasket set. I told the guy that I fund the gasket set in their web site and I that have a part #. The guy was a total idiot and a dumb azz. He wanted to sell me each individual part. I told him, no thanks and I went to autozone and they did have the gasket set.

While I share the sentiments that the counter guys are usually not exactly master mechanics- to put it lightly- They are also not mind readers. No one can know every part on every engine off the top of their head. Since they are limited to the information stored in the computer, I usually try to give them the correct model of car to work with in the first place. Sadly this still doesn't work sometimes. Although I don't prefer autozone and advance auto parts they are open odd hours and are close.
I have found that doing your own search ahead of time is helpful in this situation. Links: autozone advance auto Or go to Carquest

I used to work at auto zone, and know from experience that they seem to only hire idiots. but then again who else ya gonna get to work for 7.00 an hour, exept young kids that havent had any kind of exp with cars or parts? so what I normally do is look the parts up on the web site myself, and print it out and just go in and hand them the shopping list and then they can USUALLY get it right.
p.s I just reread my post so I feel some clarification is needed I went in as managment in there commercial dept.so I am niether an idiot (just dumb) nor did I work for 7.00 hr

350 didn't even come in pickups with a 2bbl carb.... 4bbl was what you got with a 350, as stated previously the 307 got a 2bbl.

not all were 4 barrel
some 350's came stock with single througts.......and the same with the straight 6.......and in California, the 2 barrel was a standard with smog equipment.

my 72 has a 2bbl but originally came with a four. someone swapped engines out with a 72 chevelle. my emissions sticker says four barell. autozone and oreilly didnt show a 2bbl for a truck. had to look under chevelle. go figure?

That's funny When I needed a fule pump The parst's guy asked me what year the truck was I said " it's a 67" He said " They only list a 327 thats the biggiest one we carry" I said give me that it's the same for all small blocks from a 265- to a 400 sb. He said " "Hey kid do you want a Job ? "
I get so fustrated some times I just tell the guy to point the screen my way and I will tell you what numbers to put in.

Yeahm, the caddy thing does seem to throw them off sometimes. I'll get a part for a 70 one ton, then ask for parts for a 79 caddy, then more truck parts and they'll be looking at me wondering what the heck. When I tell them what I did they don't seem to want to hear any more...like it is against the rules or something.
I had one ask me why the h*ll did you put HEI and internal regulated alt on your truck? (On the GMC) When i bought brake hoses for the GMC they swore up and down it was supposed to have discs up front. And when they ask what it had in it originally, I normally have to show them my owners manual to make them shut up on the fact that it had a 305 V-6. Quote:

just an fyi the small block 400 does have a different fuel pump than other small blocks. I found out the hard way after breaking two 350 pumps compared them and there is a difference.

hey mario i got asked the same thing i told them i already had a job and was just there getting parts.
last time i was in auto zone i told the guy i need ed a two line fuel pump for a 72 with a 350.. he came back with and electric fuel pump. i now look up the part i need on the web and just give them the number,half the time they still can`t find the part.

I sent off for the restoration pack for my 1971 C10 from Gm and under standard powertrain it states: standard equipment carburetor: CS10 single-barrel downdraft CE10 two-barrel downdraft Engine: CS10 250 Six CE10 307 V/8 Under options: 292 six CS and KS10 models only Option L25 350 V/8 CE and KE 10 models only includes four barrel carburetor Option LS9 400 V/8 CE10 models onlyincludes four barrel carb Option L47 There was also an option for Liquid petroleumgas conversion but only available on the C10 it was not available when auto trans hd clutch 307 or 400 engines were ordered Look's as though it was an option for 1971 Should be listed on the option sticker in the Glovebox

the difference is the arms on the pumps are just a little bit different. it is hard to see if you hold them together even but there is a difference, and on the pumps I was getting the arms kept snapping so that the were just dead. new fuel pump no fuel pull pump go back to store get another just like it put it on no fuel pull pump guess what go back to store 400 pump now we have fuel the angle is just different I was buying the 350 pump because we dident have one in stock with two lines for the 400.

for kicks go in and ask the zone parts guy for a radiator cap for a 71 Vw beetle or spark plugs for your duramax. Being an ex parts guy they really PISS me off!
