Too Damn Cold
I Hate Cold Weather. I went to start my truck today, and its -45 celcius. damn. but, on to my question. the truck didnt really wanna start, but it finally did. My aftermarket oil pressure gauge never did register. Its a freshly rebuilt engine, and i dont believe anything is really wrong in the bottom end, but im still wondering why it didnt show any pressure. With this cold could it cause any left over oil in the pressure line to gel off and restrict the pressureized oil from making it to the gauge>? im confused. I really hope i dont have to tear this pig down again. Im gonna grab a herman nelson and get it under there for some heat.Does anybody have any idea y im not seeing any oil pressure? too cold? thanxc in advance guyz

that don't sound right to me. Did you just put the gauge in it and were trying to start it? If so sometimes you have to bleed the line at the gauge to get any trapped air out. You'd have to be running some pretty thick engine oil for it to gel up and i don't think that would even do that. It sounds like you've ran the engine before and if so for how long? I had a heck of a booboo one time when i changed distributors from points to HEI the end on the dizzy didn't match up with the end on the oil pump. i drove it around for two days before the engine went to hell. To say the least i've invested in an oil pressure gauge now too. Good luck with it

when I first installed my oil pressure gauge, I didn't have the connection tight enough at the gauge and it wasn't allowing the gauge to pressurize.

do you have any oil in the line that you can see? crack it open just a scoch while it's running and see if you get oil to start coming out. If no oil check for a kinked line or something. And if you still don't have oil coming out of there after checking that stuff check you're in the block and make sure that sucker ain't clogged. If still a no go.......... I don't know what else to tell you man

It's -39C but with the wind chill it's -51C here in Slave Lake AB.
Funny you should post this, I was going to mention that I went out this AM to start my '02 GMC (work truck) and the wifes '02 Chevy crew cab, and they were both stiff and wouldn't start. Heres where it gets good, I fired up the 72 C-20 to boost the '02's. So I told the wife that having the old truck has paid off compared to call a tow truck for a boost. I told her that I was getting the old girl a present. I ordered a new carpet to keep her warm, It will be here Wednesday.

I'd just take the cheap way out and replace the whole hose and connections.

How long did you run it? If you ran it for more than a couple of minutes and it was not making noise....lifters...knocking etc....you had oil pressure..I thinking the guage froze

I don't like to take chances with oil pressure. I know it's cold, but I'd crack the line where it hooks to the block and crank it to see if oil comes out. That would let you know pretty quick and get back out of the cold.
