wanting to switch to a 350! what do i do?
I just got an offer today to buy a crate 350 still wrapped for $200.00. (very tempting )
What all do you have to do to switch from a 250 I6 to a 350 V8? thanks guys, sswj

Keep in mind that after you change out your engine, you'll wish you had changed your tranny, too. Once you start, it never ends and your wallet will always be empty.

i'm needing a bit more info about the swap. Like how do you get the clutch linkage to match back up, the engine towers, throttle linkage etc. any and ALL advice is not a bad thing.

You need the clutch linkage from a V8 factory truck, right from the pedal to the z bar. You will need V8 engine towers if you want to put the 350 in the forward mounting holes which is where the V8's were from the factory with the exception of the 4x4's. If you want to drop in the inline position, you can use the same towers. If you put it in the "factory" position, you will also need the front drive shadt from a V8 truck, as well as the tranny crossmember from an automatic truck. The crossmember will have to be moved forward to accomidate the engine moving forward. The throttle linkage will also need to be changed out from a V8 truck. It would be very handy if you have a spare V8 factory set up kickin around
Oh also, you will need an oil PSI line from a V8, the inline 6 one is to long

If he keeps the 3 speed he won't need the crossmember will he? My 350 is in the I6 positiion. That makes the distributor very tight against the firewall. Since the engine mounts on the block and on the bellhousing, I don't think the crossmember is required, the 3 speeds are pretty light. If you use the I6 position and 3 speed tranny, a shortbed has the one piece driveshaft, right Dubie? If you need the hard to find V8 Z bar, I have one. I kinda wish I had put my engine in the correct position, but all I did was replace the engine a previous owner had installed. Then I got fed up with winding out the gears and pulled the 3 speed and installed a 5 speed. With the 3.73 rear end, it's a much better cruiser now. 2200 rpm at 70 now.
Is you $200 crate engine just a short block or do you get heads, intake etc.? Be ready for a lot of work and to spend some money for intake, carb, HEI, headers, clutch, water pump, pulleys, hoses, plugs, wires, heads (if not included), valve covers, air cleaner, fan, alternator, brackets.... it's a long list. good luck, scott

I forgot oil pan, dip stick, starter, flywheel, thermostat. If you can buy a cheap complete donor engine for all of the parts you need, that may be the way to go.
