71 suburban info
Hi all,
Looking for solid info, or good links, to get educated on potential 71 suburban project....I was told they made only a very few 3 doors for this year....from what I can tell, that is the only version they made!!...can someone clear this up for me, and production qty. for a 71 c20 350 auto 4wd? What would a fair price for something like this be...rig is in fair shape with minor dings / rust...currently a daily driver... thanks in advance |

subbub
Here is a nice 72 for right at $5000 http://www.randysrods.com/ This seem like a fair price to me but pics can be deceiving though. As far as production numbers the panels are a lot more scarce that the suburban's. There are some rare options for the 72's though like the highlander option which had the different paint scheme and plaid seat inserts.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply....I guess I'm still slightly confused.... 68 Suburban says all were three doors, and Hutch says "As far as production numbers the panels are a lot more scarce that the suburban's. "....Plus the link he provices states the 3 door as rare... so, what is your distinction of a 3 door vs a panel,,,,panel has no third door / rear side windows? Sorry for the ignorance....is there a url showing years and build variations? I"ll browse this sites pictures section for now.... Thanks again to all..... |

Panels have 2 doors (not counting the very back), and subs have three doors, one on the driver's side, two on the passenger side.
For suburbans, it went like this: 1966 and earlier: 2 doors. 1967-1972: 3 doors. 1973+: four doors. The only way that a 3-door 1967-1972 3-door suburban is 'rare', is that there aren't that many 1967-1972 suburbans running around. The variations are basically the same as pickups. Oh, 1972 was the first year for front and rear air conditioning.

All 67-72 burbs have 3 doors, 2 on passenger side, one on driver side. Burbs could either have rear "barn doors" which closed together vertically. he other option for rear access was a "hatch/tailgate" rear door setup, which closed together horizontally, similar to station wagons of the era.
Panels are similar to subirbans except they do not have rear side glass or the "3rd" door. Panels are like delivery vans and were discontinued after 1970 because vans were more popular with tradesmen. All panels had rear barn doors. Any 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburbans are relatively rare. They made less than 2000 of them in 72 which was the highwater mark in production. The barn door versions are the rarest. Panels had no second row seating whereas burbs could be ordered with 2 or 3 row seating. All burbs have a thick plywood rear deck. If there is anything specific you've been told you want to verify or just have any specific questions, just ask.

All Suburbans are 3-door. They are often advertised as "rare" 3 doors because most folks don't realize that they don't come in a 4 door version.
The "Panel" is another model all together. It's based on the suburban body but has only two doors (like a pickup). All the usual places you see glass on a Burb is filled in with metal body panels except the rear "barn" doors. They were discontinued in 70 (or 69?) (I guess you got 3 answers to you questions at once!)

Thanks to all,,,,pretty good information....
just one more small thing....some responses reverence 72 vs my71...I would guess they are similar. Also, this supposed 71 used to have a/c,,,hoses there , cut-off in rear and under cab, and compressor etc gone...is this worth trying to resore (other than comfort reasons). "3/55" works fine here most the time.... Thanks again in advance... |

A 71 and a 72 are nearly identical. I referenced 72 producton #'s to give you an idea on production total, not to infer I thought the burb was a 72.
The differences? There are a few? The most telltale are: 1. The inner door panels on a 72 are moulded plastic 2. The 71 outer grille shell has a black accent painted on it missing on 72 grilles and reproduction grilles. 3. The R/V mirror is glued to the windshield in 72, screwed to roof in 71. As for A/C, it's overrated, but I'm from a colder climate anyway.

1971 3/4 ton 4x4 Chevrolet suburban with barn doors, 256 were made.
1971 3/4 ton 4x4 Chevrolet suburban with gate, 353 were made. As for the panels, appears that 1970 was last year for them. Info from "Standard Catalog of American Light Duty Trucks" |
