I've heard good about Doug Thorlys headers. You want shorties? Why?

Carb - Q-Jet! Edlebrock???

Electric fans - Spal - what company makes a bolt on 2 fan+shroud setup for our trucks (I know it was mega expensive)?

Alternator - Powermaster 140amp one wire

I would go with longtube Nova headers myself, don't loose any flow, and they tuck up in the frame rails really nice

Chevy 1967-81 Camaro, 1968-79 Nova, 1964-87 Chevelle/El Camino, 1971-91 Chevy Full-Size, 1970-77 Monte Carlo w/o A.I.R.

500-68608

those are the ones i'm getting. unlike the dynomax shorties, the hedman ones have 1 5/8th tubes and the dynomax have 1 1/2

Edelbrock 1904 for the carb, dont mess with an Eddy square bore if you want to make power. look for headers with at least 1 5/8" primaries, i dont see a real need for 1 3/4 primaries, but if you wanted to go that route, Heddman Hussler headers for a 67-69 Camaro will fit with slight mods and a custom trans crossmember (i have measurements for a custom crossmember if you'd like i can scan them and send them your way)

the only thing i'm pretty much undecided on is the carb, and i'm leaning towards a holley 750 vac.

With that setup I think a stage 2-3 Jet Q-jet would be better over the edelbrock.

Just bolt all of your old stuff back on to get it in there and get it fired up and running. Then start buying allof the stuff you want. That's what I did. Go the cheap route to get it running and then buy a little here and a little there.

Get a Edelbrock 1406 and Smile Q-jets are hard to tune and Holley's won't keep a tune.

Q-jets are not hard to tune. Why can't I convince you guys of this.

Jet sells Q-jets with all the tuning already done. They have different stages according to your cam/engine combo. A simple bolt and go. About all they are left to do is adjust the IM screws. Cheaper than the 1904's. This is the way for a carb novice to go. I wouldn't swap my tuned by me 1904 for 5 1406's. Nothing better than the economy or power of a well tuned Q-jet.

As for a Holley. Bah hum bug. It's made for the strip. Not a street carb at all IMO. Sure, easy to make adjustments to them, but come on folks. Them things love gas too much for me. If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. No, and I repeat, no carb will give you the the combination of fuel economy and power like a well tuned Q-jet. They have received a bad rep from people not in the know. You guys keep buying them square bore carbs. I'll stick with a tried and true carb.

Junk. Bigger cfm and all, but it's got a plastic throttle body. They will make some massive power, but don't last very long before they are totally worn out.

I dunno about that. I've re-worked several Carter Thermoquads over the years (used to be a Dodge man) and they also have an undeserved bad rep. The only real flaw, as was mentioned, is the phenolic resin center section. Sometimes they will warp due to heat. My sollution has always been to use a heat shield designed for quadrajets. I have had many "junk" thermoquads taken to me (by ham-handed shade tree mechanics) and have yet to build one that wouldn't smoke the a$$ of ANY quadrajet. It's like Mike with his Q-jets....you just have to know their flaws, know how to defeat those flaws and know how to tune them. They are VERY finicky, but once tuned, usually stay spot-on. I would put one on my up-coming 454 build, but it is getting harder and harder to get a rebuild candidate that hasn't been molested beyond saving by some twit. I don't really have the time for the finicky tuning procedure anymore, either.

*EDIT* In fact, I spotted an NOS thermoquad on e-ghay, set up with electric choke and chevy linkage (the Thermoquad "performance" model). I bid HIGH on that sucker to mount on my new 454, but i'll be damned if I didn't get sniped in the last 5 seconds. I guess someone else wanted it more than I did.

If your wanting all the power you can get from this motor I would scrap the Edelbrock carb idea. Great for a driver but not performance in my opinion.

i would put 5 stromberg carbs on it and strap a box fan to the radiator with zip ties.

i figure since you have already got people telling you to do 10 different things i might as well make up another idea.

We're not telling what to do. We're telling him what we would do or have done. Besides, he can't seem to make up his own mind anyway.

people can go on as much as they want about this carb does this and that one does that. but you really AREN'T going to get the best performance out of ANY carb that you buy unless you learn how to tinker with it. so i say buy what ever carb you want and familiarize (sp?) yourself with it. do some reading and some testing and you will be able to figure it out
