Let me get your opinion guys......
This is just a thought. Do you think it would be feesable(sp) to go with a 4.3L Vortec V6 setup in these trucks? My reasoning is because of the rising gas prices. Do they get better gas mileage? Just curios, they sale a 4.3l V6 crate motor don't they?

yes it can be done, I dont think anything would have to be changed, and www.paceparts.com has your engine long or short I think.

I have a 4.3 in a 2001 S10, auto, and I get 20-21 highway.

I really like the 4.3's. Tough little suckers! But I also like the origanal inlines! I personally would go with a 250 or 292 and just back it up with an O/D trans, weather it's manual or auto. I know that there are atleast half a dozen other guys on here that run an origanal inline with an O/D trans and get 20mpg or better! JMO

The 4.3's are tough motors. Basicly they are 350's minus 2 cylinders...

I know the one I got screams.........but then you are talking a lot more weight in a full size than in a little S10.

I wouldn't count on getting much better mileage to make it worthwhile. It still takes the same amount of energy to motivate your truck down the road, with a V6 as it would with a V8. I have gotten better mileage before with a bigger engine in the same vehicle, I think because the bigger engine didn't need to work as hard as the underpowered smaller engine.
Tuning up as best you can and taming your driving habits would probably have better effect. And before going to such an extreme of downsizing the whole motor, I think I would try a 2 barrel carb on the V8 first.

I used to have a 2000 Silverado (4x4) with the 4.3 V6 and automatic with overdrive. Got about the same mileage with it as the guys with the V8's got. Had plenty of power.

What would be needed to do a complete install...?
Do these have the computer and injection...?

It should be practically a drop in replacement for a Small Block V-8. It is as 72 Custom Camper said a 350 without 2 cylinders. Same Water pump, timing cover, brackets, just shorter block heads and manifold. I think the Motor mount location is even the same as a 350. Correct? They have both carb models and injected, depending on what you pull it from.
