Hatch Hinges
Has anyone rebuilt the hinges on their Hatch?
Do they make a kit or do you have to questimate what the bushing sizes are |

I am just working on rebuilding mine using carriage bolts that are filled down. I am having a hard time finding the nylon bushings though.

Someone on ebay I thought had a set for sale that they said had just been rebuilt. It was a board member. I got so busy I never got a chance to contact them

You can by some nylon or teflon stock and machine it down to size. It machines beautifully. Comes in handy for a soft face punch as well.

hatch hinges rebuild
Hey Guys,
I just re-built mine. I bought some bronze door bushings and drilled the one hinge that they go in. Drilling the hole a little bigger by stepping up in drill size little by little untill the bushings fit in the hole snuggly by tapping them in with a hammer.On the other half of the hinge i ground down just a little bit of metal off of each side untill the 1st half fits in.I gave it a little play. The bronze bushings have a little thicker rim .By using the bronze bushings the hatch will outlast the plastic ones. The bushings i used looked like a side door bushing but with a little thicker sides and they had grooves on the side of them.I think the pin that holds the 2 together are still available from the dealer. P.S. the inside diameter of the bushings for GM are somewhat standard in size.same with the pins hope i can help ya out Tom Last edited by earnhardt221; 04-25-2004 at 12:48 PM. |

Do you just cut the pins to length depending on which hinge you are using them on? Any time I have looked at the rebuild kits, the pins look really long.

I found a set of pins in one of the help rebuild kits at a local parts store. Haven't bought yet no time. I will try and get a part or kit#

hinge pin length
The ones i bought from the dealer were the correct length.If you buy a set that are too long just cut them to size but leave them a 1/2 inch long and taper the ends.The ends are tappered so when you hammer them out the ends do not mushroom.The pins i bought from the dealer did not have a rounded head like a rivet.They were flat but still look good.
